Charles Tart

Shift Magazine’s editor-in-chief, Matthew Gilbert interviews his guest, author and pioneer the field of consciousness studies, Charles Tart, PhD.  They discuss the often accepted belief that science proved that religious and spiritual practices were superstition and probably neurotic.  Yet people keep having spiritual experiences, but doubting them.  Charles tells us why it's reasonable to be both scientifically and spiritually inclined.  He explains that our beliefs can have major consequences for how we feel about ourselves and how we live our lives. There's plenty of scientific evidence that we have some of the qualities you would expect a spiritual being to have.

I really had a lot to think about after listening to this. I don’t find this material easy. I joined IONS hoping to find a safe place to discus these sorts of ideas, but the idea of being both spiritual and scientific still makes me so uncomfortable. Unfortunately, the way I experience the world is making it difficult to ignore the fact that at least some part of me is spiritual. I found this talk very helpful. I’m sure other scientists facing the same kinds of difficult questions will also find this helpful.

Thank you, Dr Tart. You made this very challenging material much more approachable than I would have thought possible. That being said, I still have a lot to think about.

Hi Sandstone,

You may find Dean Radin's talks, and video, archived here, of interest. Go to Luminaries, find Dean Radin, scroll down to "Taboos".
There are a couple.
I enjoy Dean's take on empirical examinations of such topics.

I hope you enjoy.

Hi JED,

I did check out Dr Radin's talks as soon as I found this site. I've read both of his books as well. Entangled Minds is one of the most comforting things I've ever read. I know that sounds very unscientific, but that was my initial reaction.

Thanks,

Sandy
