The Election Mandate
A Case for Positive Uncertainty
H B Gelatt

In my opinion, if there ever was a mandate for the adoption of positive uncertainty, the time is now. Perhaps that is my opinion because Positive Uncertainty is my paradoxical philosophy of decision making (Creative Decision Making, Using Positive Uncertainty*).

THE I OF THE BEHOLDER
The Subjective You
H B Gelatt

"Each mind inhabits a private universe of its own devising." Diane Ackerman

Have you ever asked yourself --- “Why did I decide to do that?” “Why do I see things this way? What do I really believe? This is a process of reflection or self-examination,a process of asking yourself questions and also providing the answers. That’s what this is about --- you looking at you, the subjective you. The subjective you takes place in your mind, where you formulate your private universe (your personal worldview) of your own devising.

IN SEARCH OF IGNORANCE
Cultivating a Beginner’s Mind
H B Gelatt
“Genuine ignorance is profitable because it leads to
humility, curiosity and open-mindedness.” John Dewey

A lot of people are working on the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Not many people are even discussing Genuine Ignorance (GI). I believe ignorance has been getting a bad rap. Perhaps that is because in our culture we believe that intelligence is a good thing to have, even if it’s artificial, and ignorance is a bad thing to have, even if it’s genuine. But if we could promote genuine ignorance as being profitable, it might catch on. In America, being profitable is probably more popular than being intelligent.

THE BENEFIT OF DOUBT
To Be Uncertain is to Be Wise
H B Gelatt

Faith is fine, but it is doubt that gets you an education. Unknown

As I was writing this newsletter, a Pulitzer and Tony winning play called “Doubt” was on the stage in San Francisco. This play is about the elusive nature of truth. John Patrick Shanley, the playwright, says, “When I was a boy people with doubt were considered wise people, and now they are considered weak people by much of the culture. This play examines this issue. You may come out of my play uncertain. You may want to be sure. Look down on that feeling. We’ve got to learn to live with a full measure of uncertainty. There is no last word”
