Buried Prejudice ~~ Last New Discussion Idea for IONS Community Groups Until September 2008.
"Deep within our subconscious all of us harbor biases that we consciously abhor. And the worst part," says Scientific American Mind author Siri Carpenter, "WE ACT ON THEM." She quotes Jesse Jackson who once told an audience, "There is nothing more painful to me at this stage in my life than to walk down the street and hear footsteps and start thinking about robbery -- then look around and see somebody white and feel relieved."
The Unquiet Ice ~~ NEWEST Discussion Idea for IONS Community Groups as of June 19, 2008
Glaciologist and Scientific American author Robin E. Bell reports, "A giant floating ice shelf off the Antarctic Peninsula marks the end of a great flow of ice. The flow begins with snowfall in the continental interior, which compacts into ice and slowly makes its way to the edge of the continent and into the ocean. As climate change accelerates the breakup of ice shelves, it can speed the movement of the "upstream" ice across the land and into the sea.

Probably all ShiftInActionites will be interested and happy to know what ABC-TV is doing to help facilitate 'The Shift'. Prefaced with, "To change our future, first we must imagine it," ABC announced an unprecedented television and internet event. It is asking us to help answer what we know is probably the most important earthly question of our time — What will our world be like over the next one hundred years if we don’t act now to save our troubled planet?

Laws of Nature, Source Unknown? ~~ Newest Discussion Topic for IONS Community Groups as of May 13, 2008
"Gravity,"goes the slogan on posters and bumpers stickers. "It isn't just a good idea. It's the law." And what a law. Unlike, say, traffic or drug laws, you don't have a choice, observes New York Times writer Dennis Overbye, about obeying gravity or any other law of physics. Jump and you will come back down. Faith or good intentions have nothing to do with it. But, say other scientists, there may be another alternative: the random higgledy-piggledy process may somehow turn out to be true. Consequently, the dichotomy between forever true and evolving emergent might turn out to be as false eventually as the dichotomy between waves and particles as a description of light.
