Duane Elgin on the Essential Shifts

Futurist and author Duane Elgin has taken the long view of human evolution for his entire career. In this interview with Matthew Gilbert, he paints an optimistic picture of how humanity is rising to meet the crises of our day with creativity, dynamism, and a new global paradigm. The "great turning" we are passing through is historically unique, he says. Three areas will determine our future: our relationship with the Earth (moving towards sustainability), with the rest of life (moving towards compassion), and with the universe (moving towards sacred reverence). To accomplish those shifts, we need a major change in the media, a revamped politics of consciousness, and creatively reworked lifestyles. It all begins at the nexus point where top-down social structures meet bottom-up grass roots organizing. In his view, dialogue and communication are at the heart of the shift.
