Dr. Larry Dossey’s interview about intention begins with his personal story, facing an inferiority complex as he entered college. His willing, wishing and trying nonetheless resulted in giving the valedictorian speech at graduation. In this discussion with Marilyn Schlitz, Dr. Dossey cautions us about the current popularity of books and movies that promote intention setting for purely self-centered reasons. He believes it is arrogant to substitute his puny awareness for the higher wisdom. He begins each day with a prayer of gratitude. During his medical practice he would pray for his patients, not to be healed, but for the highest good. He sites optimism as being vital to good health and references a study from the University of Chicago that identified the three “C’s” to reduce stress: Control, challenge and commitment.

I agree with Dr. Dossey regarding the use of the power of intention as so entirely overused in the recent obcession with The Secret. Using our power to create houses and cars keeps us right in that self-centered place of "It's all about me." Living simply in alignment, in gratitude and in the mystery brings delight to the soul, and every need is fulfilled without grasping and greed. It's time for generosity to replace greed in a culture obcessed with more, more, more. May all beings be free.

Your experiece struck a cord with me. I grew up on a small farm in Iceland and used to crawl under my bed and stay there, should guests arrive. Came out when the strangers left. I then went as an exchange student to West Virginia, competed with the Speech and Debate team of Parkersburg High School and finished the season by semifinalling to Nationals and being a Parkersburgh High School Commencement Speaker giving a speach to a crowd of over 2000 people. Since I took on a managerial job with my families construction company that I have held for over 20 years. And I can tell you hinding under a desk just doesn´t cut it. Currently I am earning my Masters Degree in European Studies with emphasis on Globalization. Thank you for an inspiring lecture, I happen to look forward to my Mondays :)

Perhaps Dr. Dossey had an off day. I found him to be subtlety negative.
