Chip Conley

Chip Conley started what would eventually become the second largest boutique hotelier in America with the core insight to base his hotels on “psychographic” lines, using magazines such as Rolling Stone as a template. Over the years, he grew the business by putting a strong focus on cultivating the highest potential in all his employees. His work eventually led to the book, Peak: How Great Companies Get Their Mojo from Maslow, which shows how principles of self-actualization can be applied to a business in a way that increases profitability, loyalty, and customer satisfaction. In this radio show with host Stephen Dinan, he’ll discuss the concept of enlightened entrepreneurship, where the focus is on the growth of employees and customers so that the business generates a better world in addition to a profit. Chip is warm, insightful, and funny, as well as a savvy businessman – a perfect example of a new breed of leaders.

For the past two and a half years I have been presenting a two-day seminar on management and manintenance in industrial settings. The most common feedback I get from the attendees is that their companies treat them as a commodity, giving them no sense of ownership in the work they do. Many of them don't even know who are the customers of their company and therefore they don't know why they do the work they do.
I have expounded to them that their companies need to recognize the employees in a respectful and loving way, giving each employee as sense of importance to the entire company. But the response usually is that their management doesn't care about them.
It was very refreshing to hear Chip Conley talk about how he has implemented the very attitudes I see lacking in most of the industrial companies in the USA. I believe that if senior management in every company would take the attitude that Chip describes, our industries would be the envy of the rest of the world.
I have ordered his book.

.
I agree with you Bob. Chip took the old theory of Maslows and used it and made it work.Maslow's ERG model has been around a long time and i first heard it in the early 1970's. Wonderful stuff and astounding how long it takes to use wisedom in management.

Good to hear from you, West. I'm well into Chip's book now. One of the references I found really interessting was re: Ricardo Semler, the Brazilian entrepreneur. Some of his innovations are unheard-of in any company I've know in the USA.
I'm going to move permanently to Brazil this year and I'm very eager to know more about his philosophy. I've already spoken with two frienda in Brazil about Sr. Semler. They both know of him and his entrepreneurship.
I've read Maslow in the past, too, but what Chip, and apparently Ricardo, have done is put those principles in management practice successfully. It is great news.
My email address is fbobhand@comcast.net, in case you'd like to converse more.
