Dan Cherkin teleseminar on "Optimizing Healing in Primary Care"
Senior Scientific Investigator with the Group Health Center in Seattle, Dr. Dan Cherkin talks with host Elizabeth Miller about his research to evaluate conventional and alternative treatments for low back pain. Dr. Cherkin is particularly interested in conducting research that elucidates how healing occurs and to then use this knowledge to help redesign health care services to make them more responsive to patient’s needs. The current crisis in American medicine in general, and in primary care in particular, is creating new opportunities for rethinking and redesigning how healthcare is provided.
In this teleseminar Dan and Liz discuss how the current structure of healthcare often leads physicians to practice defensive medicine. They get stuck searching for disease in a cascade of tests that may not lead to anything except expense, discomfort and frustration. To reach its full potential, the New Primary Care will need to connect patients with a broader range of healing options than have been available in the past.
