Graeme Taylor teleseminar on "Evolution's Edge: The Coming Collapse and Transformation of Our World"
Researcher, lecturer, author and coordinator of BEST Futures, Graeme Taylor talks with host Matthew Gilbert about the need for social transformation to create a sustainable future. Graeme provides two vivid metaphors, one exemplifying our social behavior at the moment and one a model for systematic evaluation to find solutions to global warming.
The first metaphor is that of a car speeding toward the edge of a cliff. Many politicians and corporations have been proponents of making the car go faster. And now that we see the edge of the cliff, the minor efforts being made will simply slow down the car. We currently need a radical change of direction to avoid the cliff entirely.
His second metaphor for the state of the planet right now is the situation Apollo 13 astronauts found themselves in when their oxygen supply was compromised. Engineers at NASA had to come up with solutions utilizing the materials the astronauts had on hand to remove the carbon dioxide from the space capsule. We’re in a similar situation on earth and need focused effort to find solutions. He emphasizes the need to see the urgency of the situation before we pass too many tipping points and the damage we are doing to the earth will be irreversible.
