Author, Thomas DeWolf discusses with host Belvie Rooks, a journey he and nine relatives embarked on to explore their ancestor’s participation in the African slave trade from 1769-1820. Their cross continental travels included the creation of the film “Traces of the Trade” as they grappled with the emotional impact of retracing the steps of their forefathers. Tom reads a moving passage from his book, “Inheriting the Trade” which describes a place in West Africa where the castle above and dungeon below exemplified the disparity of the class system. Tom encourages us to examine the inequities in our own lives, he hopes that his family’s story will inspire us to no longer perpetuate the injustice between genders, races and social classes.
