The Mind's Brain: How Thoughts and Mental Training Can Alter the Structure and Function of the Brain.
For decades neuroscientists believed that the structure and function of the adult brain were fixed, immutable. Yes, there could be small changes at the level of synapses; those changes, after all, underlie learning and memory. But wholesale changes in such things as the amount of cortex devoted to moving a hand or finger or leg, or in the characteristic level of activity in a circuit that underlies a mental disorder such as depression or OCD, or in the function of something as fundamental as the 'visual' cortex---these were thought to be unchangeable. Now that dogma has been overthrown. The brain can change in significant ways, in response to sensory input (from the outside world) as well as to purely interior mental activity such as thoughts and mental exercises such as meditation.
The new Living Deeply series is presented by the authors of the "
Living Deeply" book, Marilyn Schlitz PhD, Cassandra Vieten, PhD and Tina Amorok, PsyD, and IONS staff. The discussions with the guests will focus on their process and experience of living a purposeful, directed and transformative life.
