Description:
Everything alive.
Everything speaks.
Each place its own mind.
Each soul unique....
Our indigenous selves know well that everything is alive, that indeed each
thing -- a doorway, a natural bridge, a desert rose, a coyote -- speaks in
its own way. Our mammalian senses spontaneously participate with the animate
life of the things around us -- with the other creatures, to be sure, and
with trees and herbs, but also with the wind, with lichen-encrusted
boulders, with rivers and storms and mountains, and of course with the
breathing Earth herself. How might we rejuvenate the forgotten intimacy
between the human animal and the animate Earth? What are the perceptual
practices, the ways of feeling and imagining, the ways of speaking -- or not
speaking -- that open us onto the magic afoot in the living land and in the
depths of the human soul?
Each place constellates a mind, a psyche, a story we might enter. A psyche
is like an ecosystem or a story -- a complex web of unfolding relationships.
How might we learn again to live within the stories of the places we
inhabit -- or those we visit (such as a redrock canyon)?
As individual humans -- with both the powers and impediments of our form of
consciousness -- we can, like no other beings we know, fail at occupying the
soul-niche we were born to inhabit. Succeeding at that task is the goal of
the process of soul initiation. Employing our native capacity to fully
participate in this more-than-human world, how might we live our lives so
that we might claim our unique place, our soul-niche, our full membership in
the Earth community?
On this program, we'll enter and explore the lost terrain of
the earthly imagination -- the mysterious realm beyond the sanctioned
borders of the modern mind.
