Harness Memories of Centered Inner Silence, and Reuse Them
[This is a follow-up to my post of September 08, 2006, which described the value and use of inner silence throughout the spiritual traditions on this planet. (See "You’re Invited to Participate in a Demonstration of Short-Term Inner Silence," 09.08.06, 11:49 PM.)]
For some people, the idea of inner silence may seem to be an unusual and unfamiliar state of mind. Our normal consciousness is continually swarming with internal dialog, fantasies, regrets, and other thoughts, and most of the time, these habits of consciousness express themselves automatically and without conscious volition. Being inwardly silent requires you to discard these subconscious habits that we all feel so comfortable with and learning strange, new ones.
In my post, however, I listed a large number of examples, of typical times when you may have experienced inner silence. This is important for people who normally feel cynical about topics like meditation, spirituality, transformation, possibility, and human potential, because it allows them to build on what they already know about the experience of inner silence in designing a path of transformation for themselves.
To use inner silence for transformation, you need to first develop your skill to create the mental state for a brief, measurable period of time. Once you can do this consistently, you can begin to apply the state of mind to your own life for reducing stress, understanding your emotions, listening to others more sensitively, resolving communication problems, developing your telepathy and other intuitive faculties, developing healing skills, improving your memory and intellectual prowess, developing greater wisdom about your life, becoming more perceptive about the situations that you’re in, and feeling happy and fulfilled.
You can use the following exercise to begin to develop the skill of generating a feeling of inner silence at will. Learning concepts about inner silence is no substitute for the actual skill and experience of using it. You can only truly understand new habits of consciousness by trying them out and practicing them. It’s therefore very useful to start with what you know, as follows:
Exercise: Harness Memories of Centered Inner Silence, and Reuse It
Step 1: Select a recent or memorable situation when you were at peace, centered, relaxed and alert, or filled with heightened awareness.
Step 2: Label this memory with a word or phrase. Use actual words—not just the memory.
Step 3: Breathe slowly and deeply, and repeat this word or phrase with every breath. Focus on the memory to invoke that peaceful feeling.
Step 4: When you feel peaceful, return to reading or to the task you were working on for a short while.
Step 5: Then repeat step 3 until you have again invoked the peaceful feeling of inner silence.
Step 6: Alternate between these two states of consciousness. Continue until you can easily maintain the state of inner silence for four breaths without saying the trigger word or phrase with every breath.
Step 7: Notice how periodic inner silence changes your experience of your other activity. Pay attention to:- Tension in your face or body that normally comes from focusing.
- Emotions or intuitions that normally wouldn't achieve escape velocity from your subconscious mind.
- Pleasurable sensations that you would normally bury under stress, hurry, or concern.
Step 8: Switch to saying, “Inner silence," instead of your original memory trigger. Practice achieving inner silence using “Inner silence? as your trigger.
- Practice being inwardly silent for four breaths while doing your normal daily activities to give yourself regular short mental breaks.
- Repeat this exercise with other inner silence memories to increase the power of the verbal trigger of saying, “Inner silence."
- Try combining four-breath inner silence breaks with every activity in your life. There’s nothing it won’t help you with.
- Notice how your feelings or attitudes about these normal activities shift when you consistently combine them with inner silence for a period of time.
There are many exercises and practices in the Global Wisdom System that apply the practice of inner silence process to whatever you’re doing or experiencing, including solving problems, tackling any issue, creating a vision statement for a group, understanding emotions better, using visualization to change your life, improving your relationship with your body, or developing your intuition.
