How to Inspire a “Corporate Shift In Action”

On a recent SIA teleconference call a gentleman called in from Germany expressing a personal interest to find out how he could become a catalyst to create a positive “Shift In Action” for his workplace. We spoke briefly on the subject and I referred him to a book that may offer him some incredible insights.

Acknowledging the Architects of Our Future
In today’s world it’s the “Global Economy” and the companies that serve those markets that are setting the rules of the road or, the “Social Culture” for years to come. In my opinion, there is no single more powerful, creative or pervasive force of change than the economy … and those that set its tone and direction.

For the most part, what used to impact, alter and shape the destiny of a country, village, family and society were the institutions of local governments and religion. That balance of influence has long since changed. We need to be both honest AND pragmatic if we ever seek to be effective when it comes to our children’s future. Today it’s the Board of Directors of those that set the rules of international commerce. The shift of institutional influence is now permanently centered within the conference rooms of commerce.

So, if concern citizens of the world are to become effective agents of positive social change and the evolution of the “humanity our species”, we collectively need to learn where the leverage points of change are centered. We need to know which “Tipping Points” are set … and how to employ these tools of change to affect the effects we say man deserves.

We need to both i) Want to with a passion and ii) Learn how to affect with brilliance the core values, beliefs and behavior of today’s social architects of humanity’s future. And for that, people with passion, curiosity and courage need to rise to the occasion. However, in order for them to muster that essential passion and courage, they desperately need a support network of cheerleaders and coaches. Perhaps IONS is one source for that support.

So, for those of you that might be interested in … “Just thinking about” … how one … “might consider” … going about creating enthusiasm with their fellow employees on such matters, I have posted a PowerPoint slide presentation for those to view and consider.

Hey, Larry. Maybe I'm just dim, confused, or misguided, but here's what popped into my wetware, regarding your third paragraph:
What seems the key factor in demoting "the institutions of local government and religion" from primary influence in human affairs is the temporary availability of fossil-fuel energy. Do I err in recalling a direct syncrony between large scale exploitation of coal and the emergence of world-girdling economic enterprise?
If we extend the model to include gunpowder, are there really significant examples of economic entities exerting planetary-scale influence, prior to, say, 1750?
My point is, unless alternative energy sources on par with fossil-fuels in abundance and efficiency are brought online soon, what sort of "Global Economy" do you forsee? The one exception, novel to our day, is information technology, which can generate and transfer value with very low energy input, provided the infrastructure can be maintained.
What seems more likely, to my limited perspective, is a sort of New Feudalism, with local economies dominating the lives of most humans, and a tiny elite continuing to "Act Globally".
A further "bone of contention" I have regards the notion of "social architects", which I interpret as a top-down model of social structure. I just don't believe societies form that way, Larry, or any other complex organic systems. There's far too much good data on complex systems now to buy into social engineering a la "Brave New World", especially if we can hold onto our information networks.
The best I could expect from any set of "Movers and Shakers" is to implement adaptive models of economic activity, "memeplexes", which might spread virally. Is this what you envision?

So JED are you missing something?

Not you but your mind perhaps. First of all did you go and look at the PowerPoint presentation? If you did, you will notice all the indications that are implicit therein. The corporate surveys are asking "The People" and its "The People" that are the source of power for change. Implicit throughout the entire presentation is "Bottom Up" ... i.e. ask the people and let them lead the way ... for its the people that make the markets that drives the corporate power of profits.

Here your mind (or the belief programs therein) have missed the point. Remember if you empower the people ... its bottom up ... its an inverted military structured org chart.

Ponder this for a moment. Who has been the social architects of your life from birth to the age - let us say - of 40? And when were you consciously aware that the you ... you thought you were ... was nothing less than the social conditioning effect the "Social Architects" had on you ... that is ... until you started thinking as an individual "out of the box" they tricked you into taking up residency.

It took a life changing event (a tipping point) that created a startling sense of "Awareness" that you had been programmed before you said that is bs and I am taking my life back. "Never again am I going to allow so-and-so to xyz to me again!" You did a self imposed diagnostic survey on what happened ... what you wanted instead and noticed the GAP and got pissed. Perhaps your energy caused an explosive behavioral reaction ... or perhaps you just quietly used that energy to make some very pervasive changes in the way you thought, felt and behaved thereafter. But it was a survey that expanded your awareness of the change you wanted thereafter. And you then became the leader of your life.

For another example ... If you do not set your life's goals ... some one else will. If you as an individual do not know how to assess who you are and why you are here you (I really mean all of us) become nothing more than another vertical piston in the money making machinery of commerce. Assessment tools awaken people to their ignorance ... as well as their power to self decry and demand control over their own destiny.

And for a final example ... look at one of the final slides in that presentation. "To The Board of Directors of the World" is meant to be addressing "all employees of all organizations." There is where the architectural power is ... its in the unique minds and hearts of every human being in this world. Ask a two year old about independence ... and then ask an adult and find out which one has more architectural energy behind their response. :-) Again, its bottom up that we need and passionately want. Our kids know ... as adults we have given up.

Someone is going to be the architect of my life ... someone is going to be the architect of your life. Add that up 3.? billion times around he world and we find out it is "Us." The only problem is ...we have given up on me, we have given up on you and the two of us has given up on us ... and in the process you and I have turned the control rods over to the elite few that think they have ultimate control over the the largest influential force in the world ... "Global Commerce."

You may wish to take a second look at ... and ponder each slide for what I am really trying to get people to think about. Who is in control of my life ... and why? ... and how can I get it back?

If you are serious about thinking how to effectively and meaningfully make this a better world ... get the book "Practice What You Preach" and then let me know if you still think I am espousing abdicating my agency to a third party. :-)

An American is not someone that lives in America ... an American to me is one who lives in and by his heart ... the heart of passion, the heart of compassion, the heart of freedom and the heart of independence. A true American has the guts to dump tea ... tell politically correct people what they really think ... and is livid over ignorance of us all for sending the class of people we send to Washington DC to represent the "heart land" of America abroad.

Politicians as well as corporate leaders of all nations need their report cards (surveys) made public if accountability and consequences are ever to serve as the continual learning feedback loop of evolution.

Pardon my soap box tirade. I guess I am just venting to society though this blog because the human decency GAP is widening every day and I see little hope for what the SIA group so longs for ... dignity ... peace ... and joy for the children of our planet.

PLEASE ... go back and review the slide presentation for the positive intention intended and hopefully inherent throughout.

I have not watched the Powerpoint, Larry, because two attempts to load it failed. I have better than T1 speed, so I'm puzzled as to why it won't go.

Jeffery ---- "Please" ... don't EVER EVER EVER (as your wrote) "shut up." First of all ... what you say "is not who you are" and secondly your words drew out some ideas from within myself that I did not know were even there. Your ideas are helping me clean out my basement :-)

The beliefs that you expressed are not who you are. The beliefs that used your mind and then your computer key board are not who you are. Beliefs are more like the speeding hand ball that challenges both the server and the receiver as they both pant and sweat like crazy. And then when they are both totally exhausted ... they both walk off the court laughing ... hand shaking ... and loving what each gave to each ... The Challenges that Stretch Man's Imagination and Skills. And the two zinger serves you threw at me really fired up a few beliefs and values of mine that needed to be fired up. Exercise is essential for life to evolve. Challenge my beliefs Jeffery ... challenge my beliefs.

Please ... and I could not be more sincere Jeffery ... never hold back with me, "ever." I despise what the "politically correct belief systems" have done to our schools, to our neighborhoods, and to our country. Freedom never comes to those crouching behind the shields of political correctness ... nor from the agony of the bomb. Freedom and war are both born from the belly of commerce so its from commerce that we must turn to if we are ever going to "truely" be a peace loving people. (See, I never would have thought of that last statement - nor many preceding it - unless you were and are willing to play hand ball :-)
