What are we, every one of us, doing each day to perpetuate the dysfunction and what are we doing to end it? Most every human system is failing to function as it was designed, continuously getting worse. We are those systems and we are allowing (contributing to) it to happen.

I try to live my life so every day I further transformation in myself and therefore the systems to which I belong and minimize the degree to which I condone or otherwise legitimize existing dysfunctional systems.

Opportunities are all around us...how do we enegage in conversation around the war, the elections, the "other" side of politics, who we complain to, how we may focus on fixing "them" rather than focusing on ourselves, how we "turn off" and numb out.

In my own experience, I find people are often more willing to hear a different perspective than they are admitting. I live currently around some very stressed and impoverished people in my neighborhood. Some practice religion and some are cynical and angry. Most express a feeling of hopelessness. Having said this, I have some of the most loving, sharing neighbors I've ever known. I find if I do not try and
express my point of view, I wait until I am asked, it is more readily accepted. I have also found over time, people keep coming back to ask more questions in their own time. I just try and live my life simply, quietly (my preference) all the while endeavoring to remain conscious or be present in whatever I am doing. Many do not like the clamoring ducks but are usu. curious about the quiet swan on the pond.

Thanks for the topic, John. I rode to work on my new recumbent bike, zero carbon, great cardio, thankyou. I, too, have no financial debt.(Karmic variety under analysis)
I speak freely with co-workers on matters of politics, religion, ecology, and economics, and blog on such matters here. I also engage in online discussions on such topics at Reality Sandwich.com.
I have a daily meditation practice, using HeartMath's "emWave PSR" biofeedback device and BrainSync binaural sound compositions. This practice has deepened my capacity for compassion, and opened many doors on personal patterns ripe for revision.
As spring gets rolling in Southwest Colorado, I'm getting out and absorbing the beauty, even if just a quick walk. I can see 12,000 ft. peaks from work, and experience profound gratitude at my good fortune.
John, I must say, I find the tone of your assessment of the human situation more pessimistic than I would make. Yes, there is trouble afoot, but that's not new. Primates only get traction when cornered, so we may see action soon. What I find encouraging is our unprecedented capacity for networking, at scales only dreamed of a generation ago.
The Multitude is Swarming, and no orthodoxy, or hierarchy, is safe.

Hi Jeffery,
I don't find the story John has passed along about the boiling frog pessimistic. It rings true. Even though I have spiritual practices, these alone do not change the dysfunctional society in which I live. Even though I speak about improving situations at work, or talk about politics, this does not seem to improve situations at work. Sadly, I work among people who are like the boiled frogs that were put in the nice water...the temperature slowly rose until they were boiled. It happened slowly, and they were unaware. Try talking to boiled frogs. They will tell you it is "just the way it is".

I am happy you can ride your bike to work. I can't ride 30+ miles over a mountain on a bike to and from work each day. There are many people in similiar situations. My husband and I were just looking at our $600.00 gasoline bill for this past month...most of which came from going to and from work. If I could find work on this side of the mountain, my gas bill would be almost nothing. So far, I can't find one. If I could find a job in my town, I could actually walk to work. Or, fall off a bike, whichever seems better.

Debt...After getting out of debt by working extra hard, etc...we are back in due to medical problems that caused my husband to not be able to work for a time. It's great to be out of debt. Easy to get back in if there are medical issues.

Yes, I live surrounded by beautiful mountains. I pray, meditate, network, try to be as green as possible. It almost doesn't matter...I am slowly being boiled. One difference, I feel the pain.

Hi Bob,

After reading this particular post to Barbara (Hi, Barbara), I checked out this website you talked about and decided to give it a try myself. What the heck. Work at my current job, though I love it, has dropped off dramatically and I need to do something to bring in more $$$. Simple as that. I would dearly love to quit work altogether and go back to school, taking variety of classes from American History to World Geography to Literature, Math, etc. Perhaps this work-at-home will give me the time to do that. We'll see.

I seriously hope this isn't a scam, but I am not going to worry about it. I'll just see what comes and go from there.

Advanced thanks for the info. I'll keep you, and everyone else posted on what happens as it may effect others here. Good or bad, I'll let you all know.

With Conscious Sincerity that inner peace finds the inner you,
Nancy

Must you stay in the pot? Is the solution worse than the problem?
If medicine is the solution, and life sucks after treatment, why treat?
If driving miles to work in Hell is the solution to debt, well, I don't know. Never done it. Saw my dad do it. No thanks. No debt, no credit, no assets, no career, no degree, no marriage, no kids.
Got peace, though. Not always, but enough. Enough to abstain from booze for twenty years. abstain from putting loaded guns to my head for thirty years, and actively seek beauty in every day.
Got love, though. Same amazing woman, eleven years, one day at a time.
(Roughly compatible neuroses can make all the difference.)
And I've got a ringside seat for the end of civilization as we've known it. I look forward to civilization as we've never known it. Maybe something good, maybe something bad. Indeterminate. Oh shit.
When Renesch refers to dysfuntional aspects of society, I nod, but don't freak out. There ARE functional aspects. Kindness between strangers, random acts of humor, sudden beauty, a gradual awakening of human beings to the simple ecstasy of Being Human.
All that crap that's falling apart, I never gave much credence to, and was called crazy for that.

Who's laughing now, Renesch? I am, monkey-boy, I am.

JED,
One day at a time is great for overcoming addiction. Maybe one day at a time is great for some people for life. I am involved in one system that works. It is the system of marriage which I do not view as one day at a time. It is a committment that has worked for us for 30 years. For me, part of the dysfunction of our society is the inability to make committments. Also, I believe humans need systems in order to function in non-anarchic ways. These systems need to function in humane ways. The main problem in our society, as I see it, is desensitization. This desensitzation comes from misuse of technology...hours with TV....hours with computer at the expense of human contact. Imagination has become an atrophied muscle in which passively displayed computer screens have taken the place of trees transformed into castles and hills as obstacles to overcome in a world where child's play has become a lonely game of solitaire in front of a misused machine. Also, an addictive quality has entered our workplaces, etc., most likely because people are addicted to things. An addictive quality is ruining our systems. You might want anarchy, I don't. I think there is a lot of hope for the future. The only way we can succeed in solving our present situation is in identifying, not denying our difficulty. People have always had systems whether they were tribes, countries, churches, clubs, places of business, whatever. I believe we need functional systems.

What did I do today to help? I tried very hard to teach children to use higher order thinking. To use their minds.... What is this monkey boy retort? Why? How does it make sense? What is it's meaning for you? How does it fit your schemata?

Hi There,
How do you make money?
Barbara

Submitted by Jeffery DeCelles on March 31, 2008 - 7:08pm.

I work for a privately held engineering and manufacturing company, doing technical assembly of waterblasting tools. I turn wrenches, on high-tech precision hunks of stainless steel, which then get shipped to distributors and end users around the world. We ship over $1M per month, growing at <20%/yr. I got this job by grace, persistence, and my native charm. I keep it by doing the best job I can, and being the best human-in-working-relationship I can. Four years and counting, in gratitude for every day.
All this, and more, can be yours. I am not unique. Lucky, yes.

I withdraw my energy from existing dysfunctional systems by really limiting my participation in the Mainstream Media and especially advertising. I live very simply, I stay out of debt. I'm learning to grow my own food, and cook more homemade food. I try to buy local and shop at farmers markets. I do my own research and study to understand what's really going on in the world. I try to remember to notice my breathing and be present the way Eckart Tolle teaches. And I try to keep a balance between being aware of the existing dysfunctional systems while also holding a vision of the kind of world I choose to live in.

How do you make a living (money)? I only ask that question because work is the most dysfunctional part of my life. Each day is met with ethical issues.

And now I am talking to myself. Years ago, I worked in advertising. Fewer ethical issues presented themselves on a daily basis in that business during those years (1970's) than present themselves in a school system today. We were trying to convince people to buy products. As a special ed teacher, I have become a "case manager".
In the past, I wrote reports about children in my own class whom I knew. Now I write reports about students I have never met. I use whatever data I can find, and it is never enough. I need to know the student; observe the student; care for the student; teach in a way that addresses the child's strengths. Somehow, I have become a paper-pusher who goes to an Algebra Class; a US History Class; and an English Class. Supposedly, I am there to help the Special Education Children in those classes. My job is really paperwork. That paperwork keeps me from effectively teaching and serving the children.
This paperwork comes with legal due dates. It is everchanging and growing, daily. No kidding. Even though I do establish rapport with some students, the largest part of my job is a sham.

Hello Barbara,
My sister has two special ed kids and completely relies on the consciousness of the case workers to bestow the life supporting programs for her children. Don't under estimate the importance of the work you do! Your observations and recommendations could change someone's life for the better...or as some paper pushers my sister has encountered, who face their jobs with a lack of interest, they have caused her son to sit at home now for over a year without a program because they didn't have the creativity to find solutions and consciousness to be of service. They simply tried to find loop holes to push that paper off of their desk as fast as possible and the paper has been pushed in circles without any real concern or effort.
Thanks for the work you do. You might be surprised about what kind of a positive effect you've had in someone's life.
peace,
Angela
