Making a Difference

Wednesdays are my favorite days. Volunteering at a local elementary school helping 3rd graders read lifts my spirit. Observing each unique personality and the innocence they portray is very healing to my heart.

One little girl in particular has made a difference in my life. I will call her Julie. A few months back, each week she would have a problem, the first week she was not sleeping at night because her legs hurt and the cramps would keep her up at night. Then a few weeks later she had been in a car accident with her mom. The week after that her cat died.

Finally, I suggested to Julie to say “I’m on Top, in Tune and in Touch” quietly when ever she needs a lift. Sixteen years ago I went to a work shop by Shed Helmstetter, PhD. He is a motivational speaker and is the man behind the quote. This became Preston’s daily mantra around the age of three. I wanted to reinforce his true nature and support his self-esteem. Preston was truly in touch. It shows by the picture he drew before the wreck: http://www.laurieboggs.com/prestonmess.html.

It’s been couple months now, since I made that suggestion to Julie. I asked Julie how she is doing and if there had been a change in her life? Her bright beaming smile and turquoise eyes lit up the dark hallway. Julie said, “I have a bunny now. I just think about my cat and the memory of him makes me laugh.” She said giggling, “He was a really funny cat. When I fall asleep at night and my legs hurt, I tell myself that ‘I’m on Top, in Touch an in Tune,’ the pain goes away and I can sleep. If someone yells at me I say the quote again and I feel much better.”

Julie touched me deeply with her WILL to change her thoughts with a little tool of positive support. I am grateful to have the opportunity to see the miracles in her life and to be ON TOP, IN TUNE & IN TOUCH!

Love Laurie & Preston from Heaven:)

Great dinner and thanks. Karen and I have been doing a lot after the four of us went to dinner. I meant to share something with you but the speed and direction was so magnetic that it just got lost somewhere between the first and last Pepsi. :-)

Many years ago on the farm mom would bake fantastic deserts. Then long after dinner and late evening chores ... irrigation pipe moving ... chopping and bringing in the wood ... feeding the hogs cows etc. I would like to settle down with a quart of cold milk and have that last piece of pie, cake, or whatever. And many the times she would say ... "Oh now Larry ... I'm saving that for Preston." and then smile. Well when I got older I finally figured out who in our house was "Preston." :-)

I never heard the name before ... and only twice since ... one on the Radio "Sgt. Preston of the Yukon" then that night we all had dinner. It brought back so many fond memories of home made (from scratch) chocolate cake and real cooked choclate frosting. Hmmm ... Oh but the good old days.

Thanks for the memories.
