Blessed Rain and the Oddness of Ravens

Gray, black, blue, white - it feels so conspiratorial to behold the mountains when they become indecisive.

A cold front blew through and cold misty ambiguousness embraces the Sangre de Cristo range. Yes, there was rain, blessed rain, and there will be more. The grass seed I sowed, yesterday and Sunday, is vindicated with this precipitation. The corn is also planted - a tiny crop of ornamental corn, more for the aesthetic and spiritual value than anything else. I remember Robert Mirabal in concert, saying if you want to live a spiritual life, plant corn.

Plump quail are perusing the faerie garden. The doves have not come this evening. But birds - ah, yes, it is the oddness of the ravens that predominates. They have stacked sticks, all about 15 inches long, in a parallel stack by the electrical junction box, where the power grid interfaces with the internal wiring of the house, and also where they like to take their scraps of carrion. Power and blood. And sticks stacked so neatly: just so. They stacked the sticks with a coherence that rouses my respect anew. It is good to fall in love anew, every once in a while. No? With a bird, the world, the universe - Madaleine L'Engle noted that a life lived in chaos is an impossibility. Hmmmm. Yup, I reckon that plays well.

Been thinkin' 'bout this old hat and how hats gripe my soul. New or old, hats keep the harmful intensity of daylight from the gardener. They are hard to keep on when the wind gets gusty and determined. And hats feel like they are still there on the head long after they are removed. I wear a hat when I don my landscaper mask. Because, I know what melanoma can do.

From Eco I am learning the rudiments of semiosis, language usage, and symbolic deployment. But right now it is time to cook dinner. The ghost of my mother has seen to purple flowers along the front driveway - the only flowers of the season, so far. Purple flowers are more of an autumn thing in these parts. The doves showed up, just now, and .......... life is good, folks!

~ Meg Murry, in A Wrinkle in Time; Madaleine L'Engle

I am a tad giddy from the long awaited rain. Tis a blessing!

It's always nice to come by and sit in your garden for a while.

Thanks Ken
