A Horrible Warning From My Friend
I just received the below email from a very close and dear friend of mine that also happens to maintain my company's web site. I was getting very concern that he had not taken care of a recent upgrade which was very out of his character.
Here is his email to me. Please feel free to copy and email to your friends. My son is in the health living business and has warned my wife and I about these types of things ... and that more are going to be happening.
Richards email to Larry
A very close friend of mine, Zeke Ramirez, passed away Thursday after a horrible and painful syndrome - symptoms only appeared last Sunday. He was admitted to the hospital on Monday, and by Tuesday he had boils on >50% of his body.
He had to be transferred to the county burn unit -
as he then had to be treated as a burn victim. His body was rejecting his own skin - a condition of Stevens Johnson Syndrome - brought on by a severe allergic reaction to prescription medications.
By Thursday, and although he was in extreme pain, with boils now covering 100% of his body, he managed to smile at everyone and even laugh at our poor attempts to humor him. We lost him Thursday evening.
He had gotten his """annual flu shot""" about a week before, with no issue. But last Saturday, he took some Amoxicillin that was prescribed to his
wife. He had never had a problem with amoxicillin (or penicillin) before, but apparently the combination of the flu shot and amoxicillin caused the severe reaction.
"Although Stevens Johnson Syndrome can be caused by viral infections, malignancies or severe allergic reactions to medication, the leading cause appears to be the inappropriate use of antibiotics and sulfa
drugs.
Medications that have traditionally been known to lead to Stevens Johnson Syndrome, Erythema Multiforme, Lyell's Syndrome, and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis include sulfonamides (antibiotics), penicillins
(antibiotics), barbiturates (sedatives), lamotrigine (anticonvulsant), and phenytoin - Dilantin (anticonvulsant). Combining lamotrigine with
sodium valproate increases the risk of Stevens-Johnson Syndrome occurring."
