Announcing Gaia's Dreams (www.psiarcade.com/gaia)

Gaia's Dreams is an IONS web-based experiment based on Carl Jung's concept of the collective unconscious. It is designed to gather and analyze dream quality and content from many people, and to automatically provide graphical reports on emerging trends based on aspects of those dreams. Eventually this site may also perform daily linguistic analyses of the content of the collective dreams. Ultimately the goal is to correlate collective dreams with world events, including natural and unnatural disasters, to see if collective dreams are predictive. Similar to the Global Consciousness Project (GCP, http://noosphere.princeton.edu), which is exploring the interaction between global consciousness of large-scale world events and aspects of the physical world, Gaia's Dreams is exploring interactions between the collective human *unconscious* and aspects of the physical world.

We have all heard the rhetoric, the great orations and the rattles coming from the political planks...enough of that! We have real problems. Let’s stick with the real issues! You might be asking yourself what are the real issues...? Tough question! A key criterion to decipher the real important ones from the rhetoric is which ones affect every American...no exceptions! Wouldn’t this define our mutual, key interests? What are they? Let’s look.

“Belief means not wanting to know what is true.” – Friedrich Nietzsche

"If our faith were invested in lies and delusions, how would we know?" - Gene Derig

"When man understands that he is not the beliefs that control his thinking, his emotions or his behavioral reactions ... then and only then will humanity have a shot at evolution. Until then ... its one funeral at a time.” Unknown

When IONS Circle member Randall McCathren, Esq, first heard about the Institute, his reaction was: “Wow . . . finally an organization that combines my eclectic interests in both the spiritual and scientific aspects of consciousness and human evolution!” Randall’s interest in consciousness and existentialism goes back to his high school introduction to Camus, Sartre, Nietzsche, and Hesse. While he pursued first a physics and then an engineering degree at Yale, his undergraduate thesis entitled: “LSD Psychotherapy and the Palliative Effects of Hallucinogens,” attempted to synthesize the work of Timothy Leary, Richard Alpert (who became Ram Das) and such radical psychiatrists as Ivan Illich.

Is Consciousness Nothing But a Word?

I often seek out skeptics to help me sharpen my feelings, thoughts and insights about various aspects of consciousness. Here's an article I found particularly interesting and thought you might too. eSkeptic writer and psychology professor Henry D. Schlinger writes,“Consciousness” is only a word we use to refer to sometimes quite different behavioral phenomena." In this article Schlinger has suggested that most of the time what people mean by the word is our ongoing, though mostly covert, self-talk about our own public and private stimulation and behaviors.

How do we juggle evidence and emotions to make a moral decision? In the past decade or so cognitive scientists have begun examining what happens in the brain when we struggle with moral and ethical decisions. Co-authors of this Scientific American Mind magazine article Jorge Moll and Ricardo de Oliveira-Souza are director and researcher, respectively, at the Cognitive and Behavioral Neuroscience Unit at Labs D'Or in Rio de Janeiro. My Little Corner Of The World

Saturday morning my husband and I spent 3 hours hoeing and weeding the front yard. We managed to get the larger half of the yard done before 11am.

At one point I became stopped in my tracks. I was watching a bee buzz around a small patch of weeds I hadn't gotten to yet. The weeds with the little purple flowers. The bee was very busy, going from blossom to blossom in this little patch that was no more than 10" across, but I realized that to this bee, at this moment, NOW, that was a jungle. A huge jungle lush with flowers and leaves and stems. A few other bugs crawled on the ground of this jungle but I was mostly interested in the bee. The way he flew in and out of the vegitation as easily as a bird flys through the open sky. It amazed me. This tiny little patch was an entire jungle, which made me think how small my little corner of the world is, compared to how much world there is to see.
